US Senator Doug Jones First Original Bill Passes In U.S. Congress

I take pride in congratulating Senator Doug Jones on the passage of the first original piece of legislation he introduced in the Senate as part of the Farm Bill Package. Passage of the Bill, entitled the Rural Health Liason Act (RHLA), was announced last Thursday on June 28, 2018.

Most Alabamians understand that Farming is a risky venture. Bad market conditions or natural disasters could devastate the livelihood of Alabama’s farmers in any moment. This Farm Bill offers important protections and safety nets to ensure our farmers are covered.

According to Senator Jones, the bill provides Federal Support to rural communities across Alabama on such matters as commodity price supports and rural development to agricultural conservation and food assistance. It is going to provide protection to Alabama's farmers as well as critical support for key Alabama issues such as health care, sewage infrastructure, and broadband.

The Alabama Rural Health Association, cites 52 of Alabama’s 54 rural counties as facing primary health care shortages. As we have already seen over recent months, the state’s rural hospitals are also at risk and many are in immediate danger of closing. All of Alabama’s 54 rural counties are classified as dental shortage areas and mental health care shortage areas for the delivery of service to the low-income population, and only 16 of the 54 counties provide obstetrical service.

This new legislation will help to better coordinate the federal resources that are available to these health care providers.

Folks, these numbers are just STARTLING!

Thank you Senator Jones, for looking out for Alabama. May God be with you in your continued efforts to represent our state in the United States Senate.
